YOUR ROLE
World History AP is being commonly regarded as the hardest sophomore class by upperclassmen not only in Clements High School but also in high schools across the US. There are tremendous amounts of time and work required for this class in order for you to become part of this mission and succeed. We have the ability to provide you the best resources and advises for conquering this mission, but you are the ultimate person who make yourself to work hard in order to successfully complete this mission. Good luck, we believe in you and wish the best.
Your Responsibilities in WHAP
A. SUMMER ASSIGNMENT:
1. Questions: Doing the summer assignment is the first responsibility you have to take for WHAP. It's crucial for you to understand the beginning and dawn of human civilization and use the knowledge to do well on your first WHAP quiz and test. Understanding development of neolithic and paleolithic revolutions will indeed help you understand class lessons once school starts.
2. Vocabulary: MEMORIZE THE VOCABULARY!!! Memorizing the vocabulary will not only help you in understanding your WHAP textbook, but also do well on quizzes and learn class lessons! Some of your English II Pre-AP vocabulary quizzes have your WHAP summer assignment's vocabulary too!!
B. CHAPTER VOCABULARY AND QUESTIONS:
Complete each chapter's vocabulary and questions thoroughly. Though you may have no clue what you are writing or learning when you first start working on them, it will help you in a long run. You won't carry your 20 pound WHAP textbook with you everyday (we hope not). When you need a thorough or correct answer for a vocabulary or question, you have the resources you need from your finished vocabulary and questions. Even if you have your textbook with you, it is highly unlikely that you will have the time or patience to read through 600 words. Also, notebook tests (explained below), take large portion of its content from chapter vocabulary and questions. As a short and concise conclusion, thorough and complete chapter vocabulary and questions is CRUCIAL for you to do good in WHAP!
Before quizzes and tests, you always want to review and understand each term and question's answer completely. Many times, quizzes' matching section takes vocabulary from the chapter vocabulary and questions!

C. CHAPTER & ARTICLE QUIZZES, UNIT TESTS, AND NOTEBOOK TESTS:
- 1. Chapter & article quizzes: Complete article questions and chapter vocabulary and questions thoroughly and completely. Memorize the meaning, significance, and dates for vocabulary terms and questions. If there is an open-note article quiz, make sure you take the most important part of every 2-3 paragraphs and write any dates that the article provides! Your online textbook provides you a program called LEARN SMART, MAKE SURE YOU DO THAT FOR EVERY CHAPTER! Your chapter quizzes will be really specific and LEARN SMART's questions are detailed and analysis questions, super helpful! Lots of people mess up on the quizzes, make sure you don't join the bandwagon of failing quizzes! (normally, each question on your quiz is worth about 8-12 points. Do calculations in your head!)
- 2. Unit Tests: Study and understand test review questions thoroughly and completely. Make sure you understand the chronological order of events and know various causes, effects, significance, and continuity/change as a result of an event/person/object.
- The ideal way of studying for WHAP is to count how many chapters are on your test, and start studying that number of days before the test (say I have 6 chapters on my test and my test is on 1/25/2018, I would start studying 6 days (6 chapters) before the test date. So I would start studying on 1/21/2018). In this rather slow method, read 1 chapter a day and review all the papers about that chapter (vocabulary, articles, etc.). This way, you will have a strong foothold on what you are learning. You may think, I will probably forget everything I reviewed after 5 days. Trust us, you will not. By looking at the review and doing in-class review activities, your memories for chapters will come back in one second!
- *CAUTION: this studying method can be used only if you have time and energy! It won't fit everyone, but it probably will work for some people. This is ONLY a recommendation for those who is struggling in WHAP and trying to figure out how to score high on tests!
- 3. Notebook Tests (Craddock only): Cramming and copying friends' work don't work on notebook tests, and other daily grades. You need to make sure you glue/tape/write assignments in your notebook and keep up with everything going on inside your notebook! We aren't teachers who you barely listen to! We just finished a notebook test about 3 weeks ago and class average was in low B range! We went though this and had many regrets in things like not putting assignments in order or not writing everything clearly and thoroughly! THIS IS A RESPONSIBILITY YOU HAVE TO TAKE THROUGHOUT THE MISSION!!!! STUDY HARD TO SURVIVE!!
D. Correctly Reviewing for the AP:
- 1. AP Review Sessions: Attend Review sessions hosted by AP teachers (especially Mrs. Craddock, she answers your question and explains her answer with in-depth detail and analysis that will help you understand and memorize the answer). You will do SAQs during review sessions under standard timing (12 minutes for 1 SAQ which contains 3 parts; confusing, we know. More details in "Survival Tips".) and figure out how fast or how detailed you want your writing to be. Review sessions are also places for you to ask questions you have and know what you need to review on.
- 2. After School Mock Exam: Most efficient and accurate way for you to learn the formatting of the exam. The mock exam is given by College Board (who WRITES your AP exam)!!! It's your responsibility to go and understand your mistakes and learn how to make yourself better! You are not taking this exam during class, it is AFTER SCHOOL.
- LEARN HOW TO MANAGE YOUR WRITING TIME! Make sure you learn how to control your own time. Timing is the KEY to do well on AP test. Know how to pace yourself on multiple choice and timed writing sections so you will not loose any points by not writing anything!
- Class PowerPoint: Review the PowerPoints at home. Mrs. Craddock's PowerPoints are on point and organized so make sure you review hers before taking the exam (there are only about 15 PowerPoints!) We do not encourage nor disapprove you from purchasing AP review books. However, it is most likely that you procrastinate and not have time to open your AP review books before WHAP Exam. In class of 2019, for example, many people didn't open their WHAP review book until 3 or 5 days before the exam due to other classes' projects, tests, and quizzes.
- It is super likely that you will not have much time to review for WHAP (or 0 days depending on what a procrastinator you are) when actual AP exam approaches. Make sure you learn, study, and review every unit carefully so that when you begin to cram (or not) for WHAP in may, you won't have to relearn everything and loose precious sleeping hours! Remember, you are learning over 8000 years of history, and you cannot learn 8000 years in 1 night! Take your responsibility!
Remember, nobody in WHAP has perfect As for every single quiz, test, time writing, or in class activity. WHAP is where you learn how to take tremendous study responsibility and learn what your role in studying is!
